Dingens Barometers |

Last friday (4th
of March) REcentre
launched its collaboration
with Dingens
Barometers.
Paul Dingens from
Dingens Barometers
invited design
students from
the MAD-faculty
(Genk and Diepenbeek,
BE) and Gut Rosenberg
(Aachen, DE) to
explore his precious
measuring instruments
in his beautiful
barometer museum
in Beverlo, BE.
During three workshops
the students will
work around the
main question
of how to develop
a modern version
of a barometer
while using 'accuracy'
and 'sustainability'
as unique selling
propositions for
it. The students
will get help
of professionals
such as Katja
Craeghs from Greenpoint
and Gauthier de
Pierpont of A
Hermes. |

Dingens
Barometers (Beverlo,
BE) - No longer
under the Weather
after Mercury |
Sustainability
means turning
a crisis into
an opportunity.
How necessity
can lead to innovation.
Afther the exclusion
of the use of
mercury in barometers,
Dingens Barometers
had to find other
solutions to produce
their barometers.
They worked together
with the University
of Hasselt and
that’s how they
arrived at a
new barometer
system
that is at least
as accurate as
mercury barometers:
a combination
of a membrane
and aneroid cells.
"Now that there
is an ecological
equivalent on
the market, it
will be a special
point to make
the product sexy
again with an
eye to design",
says Paul Dingens,
Managing Director
of Dingens Barometers.

mobility.
Gilles Falisse,
artist and designer
of the Mottrix,
never stops inventing.
He invents and
tests ecological
mobility solutions.
The Mottrix exists
of a kit containing
a light motor,
that can be easily
fitted to almost
any type of bicycle
in less than 30
minutes.
Used with a ‘standard’
bicycle, this
system offers
a no-pedal range
of approximately
20 kilometres
with its pair
of lead batteries.

Een
duurzame en warme festivalzomer
gegarandeert: REcentre werkt samen
met Les Ardentes en Dingens Barometers
Sustainability at School 2010-2011
REcentre
organiseert voor de tweede
keer ‘Sustainability at School’;
een geslaagd concept waarbij ontwerpstudenten
en ontwerpers uit de Euregio Maas-Rijn
economische vraagstukken op een
creatieve én duurzame manier
oplossen.
Les
Ardentes
REcentre
gaat dit academiejaar in zee met
twee organisaties: Les Ardentes
en Dingens Barometers. REcentre
stapt weer naar Euregionale designhogescholen
(École supérieure
des Arts Saint-Luc Liège
(BE), Akademie für Handwerkdesign,
Gut Rosenberg Aachen (DE) en MAD
faculty (BE)) om samen met de studenten,
docenten en professionele ontwerpers
concepten en producten te bedenken
die een oplossing kunnen bieden
voor de cases van beide organisaties.
Les
Ardentes is een vierdaags muziekfestival
dat elke zomer wordt georganiseerd
in Luik (BE). Het festival zet internationaal
muzikaal talent op het programma
en ontvangt jaarlijks zo’n
70.000 bezoekers. Een groot publiek
betekent ook een complex logistiek
systeem. Les Ardentes daagt de deelnemers
van Sustainability at School uit
om op een duurzame manier de energievoorziening,
het transport, de afvalverwerking,
de catering,… van het
festival verbeteren. “Om het
festival nog duurzamer te maken
willen we graag ontwerpers ontmoeten
die de duurzame ontwikkeling van
Les Ardentes ondersteunen”,
aldus de woorden van de organisatie
van Les Ardentes.

Barometers
Dingens
Barometers (Beverlo, BE), is een
internationale fabrikant van barometers
en andere meetinstrumenten. Sinds
de afschaffing van het gebruik van
kwik in barometers heeft het bedrijf
veel geïnvesteerd in innovatie
op het gebied van duurzaamheid.
Paul Dingens, bedrijfsleider, daagt
de studenten uit om de barometers
in een hedendaags en duurzaam jasje
gieten: “Hoe kan de investering
die gedaan wordt in duurzaamheid
(en daardoor het product duurder
maakt) worden gebruikt om toch een
economisch succes te worden? Het
product heeft voor jonge consumenten
een ouderwets imago. Hoe en met
welke producten kunnen we jonge
mensen bereiken?

Workshopreeks
De
studenten staan er niet alleen voor: REcentre
nodigt experts uit verschillende vakgebieden
uit om hen tijdens een driedaagse (februari
– maart – april 2011) workshopreeks
te begeleiden. Aan het einde van de reeks
zullen de deelnemers aan Sustainability
at School hun projecten voorstellen aan
een professionele jury en wordt het beste
project beloond met tickets voor Les Ardentes.
Een vereiste is dat de concepten haalbaar
en implementeerbaar zijn voor beide cases.
REcentre
is een kennis- en promotiecentrum voor
duurzaam design in de Euregio Maas-Rijn.
Daarvoor stelt REcentre zijn netwerk en
know-how ter beschikking aan bedrijven,
ontwerpers en scholen. Anderzijds zet
de organisatie ook zelf projecten op met
een maatschappelijke agenda om duurzaam
design onder de aandacht te brengen. REcentre
wil de Euregio Maas-Rijn laten uitgroeien
tot een voorbeeldregio op het raakvlak
tussen ecologie en economie.
REcentre
is een Interreg IVa project, gesteund
door Wallonie Design (Luik, BE), Z33/Design
Platform Limburg (Hasselt, BE) en NAiM/Bureau
Europa (Maastricht, NL).

is een besloten event. REcentre heeft
Euregionale hogescholen aangesproken om
de meest gemotiveerde studenten en ontwerpers
uit te nodigen voor de workshops.

en selecteerde er 4.

alfabetische volgorde ging
het om De scheepsvaart,
Dingens Barometers, Essec
en KRC Genk.
Diezelfde
jury , bestaande uit Dominiek
Claes (Het Belang van Limburg),
Marleen Fransen (Belga),
Miranda Gijsen (TVL), Dirk
Reynders (VRT Radio 2) en
Ben Rouffa (VTM) besliste
ook over de uiteindelijke
winnaar.

De
Wereld Expo 2010 in het economische
hart van Azië heeft zijn
start niet gemist. Gigantische
aantallen bezoekers, tot 400
000 per dag (!) vinden hun weg
naar de Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
Het nationale Chinese paviljoen
is uiteraard de grootste attractie.
Het imposante gebouw is het
overduidelijke herkenbare symbool
van deze Expo.
